Extreme heat and raging wildfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures expected to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major heatwave warning has been declared across a large portion of the southwestern region.

This situation come after recent fires in New South Wales, which caused the loss of homes and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have also been activated for the coming days in areas within SA and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure shifts eastward, bringing intense sunshine to much of the area.

The combination of tinder-dry land and unbroken heat presents a volatile situation for emergency crews.

Worldwide Climatic Events Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a major city was plunged into blackout recently after powerful winds compromised the urban power grid, with toppled trees knocking out electricity cables. The weather conditions also led to major transport delays at a key airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Severe impact on electrical infrastructure is expected to create further issues as service providers scramble to restore power to over 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Fog Blankets Sunny Area

Meanwhile, a region known for its sunny weather and plentiful sunlight has endured one of its grayest and most overcast periods on record. A specific type of low cloud, which typically lasts for only a short time, has been remarkably extensive and persistent this year, keeping the mercury at a key transport hub under 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The prolonged fog has been driven by exceptional fall rainfall that left soils waterlogged.
