Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was ā€œupbeatā€ during their latest talk.

ā€œThat’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,ā€ Glenn said Wednesday. ā€œHis wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.ā€

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

ā€œDon’t know just yet,ā€ he added. ā€œHowever, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.ā€

NYPD released security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts ā€œconstantlyā€ since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.

ā€œThe first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,ā€ Glenn remarked. ā€œAnd I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
ā€œThere is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.ā€

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.

ā€œHe has stayed engaged with the team,ā€ Glenn said. ā€œI mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.ā€

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
