Manchester United Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Signing for United

Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.

Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Attack

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering momentum.

Their recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
