Massive Upheaval Projected: Britain's Most Severe Climate Emergency Possibilities Unveiled by Scientists

The gravest possible consequences of the climate emergency for the UK have been mapped by scientists, ranging from a searing 4C rise in temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in sea level. Another scenario predicts a drop of 6C in temperature following the failure of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact food production and power requirements.

Plausible Extremes, Not Predictions

These impacts, certain ones are connected to climate tipping points, are seen as unlikely but plausible. The researchers stated that these projections plugged a hole in planning that had rendered the UK not ready for extreme outcomes.

"The climate extremes we have detailed aren’t predictions, but they are credible," stated the lead researcher who led the research. "The nation has been formulating policy in the absence of the tools to test against catastrophic outcomes. A second set of worst-case scenarios details the potential extent of severe conditions between now and the close of the 2100s. These indicate that thermometer readings could skyrocket in particular seasons by up to 6C above average, while precipitation could be triple normal levels.

The likelihood of the catastrophic events happening could not be calculated due to a lack of certainty about what measures will be enacted to address climate change and how the Earth's systems will react. This research was likened to defence planning or scenario planning for financial systems.

Major Outcome Details

  • Four-Degree Warming: Worldwide averages rising well above 4C by 2100 could happen if climate action fails or if powerful amplifying effects such as the Amazon basin perishing release its enormous store of carbon. This would lead to severe and lengthy heatwaves and water shortages affecting the UK in summer.
  • Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the North Atlantic current, is slowing down and showing signs of collapse due to global heating. A complete failure starting around 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. The government's climate advisors has said that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and examine the dangers for four degrees. Previous adaptation plans have been criticised as being "inadequate" by environmental groups.
