Meg Ryan has published a heartfelt tribute to the late director Rob Reiner, under whose direction she worked in the iconic rom-com When Harry Met Sally.
Reiner was found dead with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home over the weekend.
“Oh how we will miss this man…” the actress posted on Instagram, alongside a picture of them together. “We thank you, Rob and Michele, for your belief in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. Thank you for your faith in the best in people, and for your profound love of our country.”
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, faces two counts of first-degree murder and appeared in court today. He’s being detained without the option of bail. Sources state that Reiner’s daughter Romy was the one who located her father.
“I must hold onto hope that their tale doesn't conclude here, that awareness can be heightened from this,” Ryan went on to write. “While uncertain, I suspect they'd wish for a hopeful, compassionate outcome that fosters mutual understanding and peace.”
Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy released a message today. “No words can convey the constant, profound sorrow we feel,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, also paid tribute to Reiner through a message shared yesterday along with names including Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” the statement said. “He adored his actors. He elevated his writers. His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process. Collaborators felt like a unified team. Being guided by him was an honor, yet just one facet of his impact.”
When Harry Met Sally was a hit with both critics and audiences in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and securing Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner first encountered Michele Singer Reiner during the production of When Harry Met Sally. The pair were introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a friend and director.
Reiner’s notable filmography featured classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were married for 36 years.
