Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
