The Brothers from the Dagestani Region Making Their Mark in Mixed Martial Arts and at Manchester United.

Ibragim Ibragimov breaks into a smile as he thinks about how his clan's life has evolved since relocating to England from Dagestan eight years ago.

"I adore it here," the Professional Fighters League star states.

"We always remark, 'this is the nation I ought to have been born in.'"

The young man left his homeland in the Caucasus region of Russia as his father was convinced a relocation covering more than 3,000 miles offered superior career opportunities for him and his brothers.

The original idea was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to finish their education before joining one of the nation's colleges.

However, life has turned out somewhat different for the Ibragimov family.

Ibragim is now a pro mixed martial arts fighter and is regarded as one of the leading prospects in the PFL, a leading MMA league.

His siblings have chosen a different path in athletics and have all been contracted by Manchester United – with Amir aiming for a place in the senior squad.

"The primary thing for us is to extract everything from our sports," says Ibragim.

"I want them to play for every one of the best teams in the world. Now it is Man United, in the future it might be a different team."

From Grapplers to Football Prodigies

Situated in the south of Russia, Dagestan has a mythical status among combat sports fans for producing a host of UFC champions in recent years.

The region has a rich tradition in grappling, excelling in the combat sambo style and creating a host of Olympic and world champions.

This success is not a coincidence, though, as youth from the region are frequently pushed to begin fighting, specifically wrestling, practically as soon as they can walk.

"As a young, my dad was always instructing me and my little brothers that we needed to be strong, firstly to protect ourselves, your family, and your companions," says Ibragim.

"So we all got used to fighting, and which is why everyone knows how to fight in Dagestan. It's unsurprising."

"Amir was a very good wrestler. You can see the move from wrestling to football; clearly, it assisted my younger brothers a great deal."

"Some of the footballers he faces don't have the identical base he possesses. That's why he's stocky, powerful and incredibly competitive – because of wrestling."

Amir was only nine years old when he was put through his paces at Sheffield United. Unaware of his actual age, trainers placed him with boys significantly older.

He was unfazed by the mistake and was perfectly comfortable holding his own against older players because of his background in wrestling.

"They believed Amir and I were the same age, apparently," says Ibragim.

Amir was recruited, together with Ibragim's younger brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's time in South Yorkshire was short-lived, however, as only weeks after signing for the Blades, Manchester United became aware of Amir's talent and he moved over the Pennines as a result.

"They played Manchester United in a tournament and Amir netted a brilliant free-kick," says Ibragim.

"One of their scouts watched him play and picked him straight away."

Half a dozen years after joining the Old Trafford club and at the age of 15, Amir became one of the most youthful players in the club's history to practice with the first team when he achieved this in April 2023.

"Do you know what he said to me? 'This is where I should be'," Ibragim reveals.

"Is he able to be a first-team player for Manchester United? 100%. They need to allow all the young players get game time right now."

"In my opinion they would play worse than the current first-team players. I think the youngsters are more motivated than the present squad members."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once part of the academy of Manchester City, have also made the move to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this kid is talented," adds Ibragim.

"He learned every skill faster than everyone else. He's a solid defender. He's going to be like a modern Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'A Dream' to Compete at the Theatre of Dreams

Ibragim has now relocated to Manchester and dedicates most of his days perfecting his MMA abilities at a local gym.

In August, he spent three weeks in his homeland at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, assisting Islam Makhachev get ready for a November UFC title fight.

"I would never have imagined I would be training under Khabib," Ibragim says.

"He was the best fighter in the world – and we always used to idolize him when we were growing up."

"Now, I'm here in his gym and sparring alongside Islam Makhachev."

Recently training with two UFC champions from Dagestan, it is no surprise Ibragim states he is eager to win a world title of his own someday.

But that does not stop him from sometimes fantasizing of playing for United and walking out on the hallowed turf at Old Trafford, similar to his brothers.

"I had a PlayStation at home and I constantly used to play as Man United, scoring with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez," he recalls.

"Today, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's similar to a fantasy realized."

"An event at Old Trafford? It's a dream for me. I was discussing with the PFL guys about it to see if they could do it. It would be huge."
