When an 18-year-old makes club history in a crucial Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.
During his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to secure a last eight place.
Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the team.
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing football, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," said the player after his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize fans might be surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to represent both nations at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official senior international match.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are monitoring his rise with interest.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Lamine opted for Spain, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club pursue future success.
After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said following the success at Manchester.
