So, how was 2025 in your home? Did it seem truly wonderful as one might claim on online? Overflowing with A-grades for your offspring and elaborate costume gatherings for the adults? Or perhaps it was a swamp of letdowns with only rare entertaining flotsam? Could any part be genuine, or are we all digitally altered synthetic personas with celebrity teeth?
I have gathered my thoughts for a reflection, willing or unwilling, to reflect on the crucial thing in twelve months: what titles we were obsessed with the most. Without further ado:
Pikmin
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"This isn't my games column."
On her phone, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "attempting to locate reasonable healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In real life."
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He took umbrage that I even asked. Fair enough.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into acting, but when she took a break from vocals, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where the Shark has a thriving utopia with significantly better healthcare than her big sister has in real life.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. It's a long haul not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Minecraft
Every time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I rib him like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he objects, I reply that I am engaging in this to build character so he can grow up and play games for mature audiences. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is a machine. Even better than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted deck building competitive game, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that frequently update their range is you have a moment of clarity and see it is all just an attempt to lure you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a legendary franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the start. I wish I could deal with my demons so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just was short on the time or headspace to give it what it required earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the late night after evening drinks.
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was 2024’s sleeper hit, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is remarkable. It just gets each element right. Crazy Poker is a fantastic concept, but the effects behind the different joker cards are so creative it has become a game I literally would play at any hour. Throw in the cleverness of the card design, and this is an true peak of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I received a wave of criticism when I wrote about how a glitch in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I valued even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the commenter who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I present that in the exact way, because I appreciate the effort, and they are obviously an sharp judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult non-linear thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "figure it out". How delightful. I get that it has great art and is perfection if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my current stage of life. I was around back when all games were like this, and I’ve had enough. It was fine when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many outdated things.
Close call between business deals that raised eyebrows, and expensive game releases. Both ethically dubious and unpleasant.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the doorstep at tea time.
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or doomscrolling, but it aches like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the day.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the end of days.
The Witcher 4.
