Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting at least nine sailors, per a military release.

The vessels had been expected to reach Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their docking, the navy said.

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country struggles through repeated national electricity failures.

"Both crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with appropriate navigational gear and communication devices," an official associated with the mission commented.

The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their consular staff.

"The group is collaborating completely with the authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Earlier Relief Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the island.

That boat, nicknamed "a new Granma" after the yacht in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to begin the revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered solar equipment, drugs, baby formula, cycles and food.
